I haven't been here yet, but it is on my list of places to go. Once I go I will post my pictures. I will also find out if you really need to make reservations and if so how. In the mean time let me share with you the information I have gathered.
Gwangneung has an National Arboretum. It is supposed to have beautiful trees, lots of nice undergrowth and plenty of birds to see as they migrate through the area. It is supposed to be a great area to see the Korean Redheaded Woodpecker. According to Frommer's South Korea, you need to make a reservation a week in advance. However I haven't found out how you actually do that. Unfortunately it is closed on weekends and holidays. I am guessing to keep the foot traffic down. I found this great link at RokDrop that shows fabulous photos of the area.
In this same area are the Royal Tombs of King Sejo (1417-1468, reign: 1455-1468) and Queen Jeonghui (1418-1483). For more information look at this Official Site of Korean Tourism. This link also shows hours, directions, and other pertinent information.
Pictoral Korea also had some great information on this area.
YouTube has a video on this area as well. The video is in Korean but you can still get a good idea of what it looks like.
