Air Travel for Pets

I am moving from the Midwest. For me to send my pets to Korea is quite an ordeal! If you live in a big city with an International Airport it won't be as bad. I have talked with almost every single carrier and it is quite complex to get your pets to Korea.

Continental Airlines does not ship pets to South Korea.

Delta Airlines was probably the most complicated to work with. Leaving from St. Louis you fly your pet to either Minnesota or Georgia. From there it needs at least a 4 hour lay over until it catches the next flight to Norita Japan. Once in Japan your pet needs to stay in quarantine for at least a day then flies on to Inchon. In order to make the reservation you have to call back east (202-238-6700) to get a number from the Japan representative saying you have talked to them and agreed to the price of kenneling/quarantine in Japan. It runs about $200 per pet. Then you call Delta back and they will book your flight. The quote I got at the time for a small kennel total weight less than 25 pounds was just under $300. If your pet is kennelled any time during their travel you will incur more boarding fees.

Korea Air was nice to talk to. However you have to get your pet to one of their airlines in order to ship it. Unfortunately for me that means getting fido to Houston Texas which is a 9-hour drive. Also Korean Air only takes cash payment for shipping pets. The pets do not go in the same plane you are traveling in. The pets go on a cargo plane. They were very helpful and it was much less complicated than Delta.

The easiest carrier to use by far is American Airlines. You simply fill out a form on their web site and they get back to you within 24 hours with a quote. They handle everything on line. After you get a quote you simply call them 10 days prior to your pets departure and they will give you the reservation. Their site also lists everything you need for your pet. When they email you back you will also have an attachment with more information.
