When my boys were young we used to go to the DFAC every Friday. It was a real treat for them to be able to eat with dad. It was great for our pocket book as well!

Military Family Members Allowed to Eat in Area I Dining Facilities Effective April 1, military family members are permitted to eat in all dining facilities on Area I installations as part of a 60-day trial, EXCEPT Camp Casey’s Iron Horse Café. The Iron Horse Café will not participate

because it’s operating above 100 percent capacity. Family members will pay the existing rates (see attachment) based on the pay grade of their sponsor. Please click the download tab for the rates and information.

Movie Theaters to Start Charging Admissions

Well, I for one don't like this one bit. I have been involved in many different services, to include: Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and now Army. I have found that the movie theaters make a whole lot more money by not charging admissions fees. When the movies are free they get a much larger turn out, and almost everyone buys concessions! Movies are a way for everyone to have something to do besides going out in the Ville at night. I think at the very least it should be free for Active Duty! If they want to make more money then expand their concession offerings.

Beginning May 1, 2011 bases will begin charging for movies. Even though theatergoers will no longer be subsidized, prices at AAFES theaters remain well below the national U.S. average.

Army garrisons in Korea to charge for movie theater admission

YONGSAN GARRISON —Free movies on U.S. Army garrisons in Korea will be a thing of the past May 1 as theaters here join other overseas garrisons by charging for theater admission.
Under current operations, Family Morale Welfare and Recreation funding pays the Army Air Force Exchange Service an admission price of $2.50 for every patron who attends a movie on post –but this funding is no longer available.
Starting May 1, Exchange theater patrons can expect to pay the same standard admission prices for movies at all Exchange Theaters world-wide. Those admission prices are $5 for first-run movies and $4.50 for regular releases. Admission for children 12 years and under will be $2.50 for first runs and $2.25 for regular movies. Repeat showings, which are movies that have been released on DVD, will be $4 for adults and $2 for children, and Special Play movies, such as classics, will be $3 for adults and $1.50 for children.
Ron Buss, FMWR Business Programs chief, suggested these prices remain a generous benefit to patrons when compared to continental U.S.-based garrisons. A goal of FMWR, he said, is to provide Soldiers the things they would have back in the United States. Under these new operating principles, Soldiers will be able to attend the movie theater in Korea at cheaper costs than what they would be paying in the United States.
Although patrons pay similar prices for movies at CONUS garrisons, first-run movies in the United States are not available in CONUS garrisons –they are only available at commercial theaters where prices can exceed $10 for admission. The $5 new release is an overseas benefit only.
Why Charge for Movies?
The decision to charge for movies is necessary to remain fiscally responsible. Like many other governments around the world coping with global recession, Uncle Sam is “on a diet,” said Dan Thompson, IMCOM-Korea Public Affairs officer. The current operating mindset reflects this healthy change. In the past FMWR budgets allowed for free movies in Korea partly because it was affordable at the time. But free admission is no longer feasible due to recent economic hardship, combined with an increase in the Exchange admission fees, Buss said.
Elizabeth Sandoe, Exchange area manager in Korea, said the $2.50 admission price paid by FMWR no longer covers their expenses. And, even when paying Exchange theaters at the lower price, FMWR incurs an annual expense of nearly a million dollars for theater admissions —the budget no longer allows for this expense.
Sandoementioned that admission fees in May still won’t amount to much profit since the majority of admission fees goes to copyright costs for movies. But, she said prices are being kept as low as possible to benefit Service members and their Families. Like other theaters, most of the Exchange operating profits come from items sold at the concession stand.
USFK and IMCOM officials said they agree the policy to charge for theater admission is the right thing for Korea as the Army moves towards tour normalization here.

Col) Raymond Robinson, 2nd Infantry Division chaplain, will be the guest speaker. Music will be provided by the 2nd Inf. Div. Band. There will be time for fellowship and a continental breakfast after the service in the chapel annex. Regular services will still be held.

I am sad to have to even post this. However with that said we have been through a couple of these in the past, and funding has always been there at the last minute. With that being said, it is better to be prepared for the worst. This if copied from "National Military Family Association's" website.

We are hours away from a possible government shutdown which has created worry and stress for military families. Fiscal Year 2011 started on October 1, 2010, but Congress has yet to approve the needed funding bills to keep most of the government, including the Department of Defense running. Temporary spending bills—Continuing Resolutions—have provided short-term funding since October, but the latest expires this Friday, April 8. Some in Congress are trying to ensure service members get paid even if an agreement is not reached on a temporary measure or on the larger Omnibus Appropriations Act needed to fund the government for the rest of the fiscal year. Military service members and their families are concerned about whether they will get paid on time and also whether essential services will be available.
The number one question we have heard from families is – will my service member be paid on the 15? Service members are exempt from furloughs, meaning they still have to work. Their work will be paid for, the question is when? Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said on Wednesday:

if the government shuts down on April 8 and goes for a week, service members would get half of a check on April 15 (pay from the April 1 – 8)
if the shutdown runs past April 15, service members would receive pay after the budget or a Continuing Resolution is passed.

Retirees will receive their retirement pay.

Where to go for Financial Help

Do not turn to payday lenders – your military community has the resources to provide assistance. If your family experiences a hardship due to a reduced paycheck, we urge you to seek assistance from a military aid organization or military bank or military credit union. Aid organizations and military banks and credit unions have short term loans available to help in this situation.
Aid organizations will remain open and are ready and willing to help service members and their families.

Our Association has contacted a sampling of military banks and credit unions. In the event of a government shutdown, some military banks and credit unions may waive fees associated with the possible shutdown. Others have stated they will consider permitting families to skip a loan or credit card payment. We urge military families to contact their bank to review their individual situation and the guidance established by their financial entity.
Military families who use automatic payments are encouraged to contact their bank and make alternative arrangements. For example, families may transfer money from a savings account to a checking account to cover the automatic payment.

What services will remain open during a potential shutdown?

The Department of Defense and Services are currently evaluating their essential personnel and support services. Service members are expected to report to work. However, Reserve component personnel should refer to their chain of command for specific information.

Patriot Express flights from Republic of Korea will be suspended until further notice as these flights are being dedicated to assist in the movement of military members from Japan.
Personnel who have been ticketed for official travel aboard flights to or from Korea after today, should contact their installation’s official travel office immediately to reschedule their travel aboard commercial carriers.

Customers must print out their Army W-2 Forms before meeting a tax preparer and bring all relevant materials to their appointment, including all W-2 forms, 1099s, 1098s, social security cards, a power of attorney for taxes if their spouse will not be present at the appointment and a copy of their 2009 tax return. My friend Doris is setting up an "Educational Play dates in Area 1." If you have any questions follow the like for Face-book or feel fee to leave comments.

Many parents see starting school as a huge milestone in their child's life. It means more independence, knowledge and let's be honest, a break for mom! But, it can be scary for a child that is unaccustomed to being in a learning environment, especially without their parents! Parents often question whether or not their child is ready for school, I am here to help with that. I can help jump start the soon to be transition from staying at home with mom, to doing full time school. It is easier for a child to go into pre-kindergarted already knowing the basic curriculum. Your child will be the top of the class! I accept ages 2-5 for preschool, and if I have enough parents interested in doing Preschool, I will actually have a class! Your child would be able to interact with other children, in a learning environment, and you will get much needed mommy time! Ideally, I would like to do a class 2 or 3 times a week, either Tues and Thurs or M,W, F, for 3 hours a day. Either 10-1, or 1-4. I would like to have class at my house, since I have all the materials here, but I understand that would be hard to do, considering Casey is half and hour from me. Cost is to be determined. if you are interested in preschool, please let me know. Ideally, it will be 25 dollars a week per child, which includes the 3 times a week for the 3 hours a day. But, if I have only one child sign up, that would not cover my travel costs. So, basically if I can get at least 5 preschoolers, it would be 25 dollars a child for the week. If not, then it would be treated the same as a babysitting.

Updated Worldwide Caution Issued by the U.S. State Department

The U.S. Embassy is transmitting the following message via its warden system as a public service to U.S. citizens in the Republic of Korea. Please disseminate this message broadly to other U.S. citizens.

The Department of State has issued this Worldwide Caution to update information on the continuing threat of terrorist actions and violence against U.S. citizens and interests throughout the world. U.S. citizens are reminded to maintain a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness. This replaces the Worldwide Caution dated August 12, 2010, to provide updated information on security threats and terrorist activities worldwide.

The Department of State remains concerned about the continued threat of terrorist attacks, demonstrations, and other violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests overseas. U.S. citizens are reminded that demonstrations and rioting can occur with little or no warning. Current information suggests that Al-Qaida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks against U.S. interests in multiple regions, including Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. These attacks may employ a wide variety of tactics including suicide operations, assassinations, kidnappings, hijackings, and bombings.

Extremists may elect to use conventional or non-conventional weapons, and target both official and private interests. Examples of such targets include high-profile sporting events, residential areas, business offices, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools, public areas, and locales where U.S. citizens gather in large numbers, including during holidays.

U.S. citizens are reminded of the potential for terrorists to attack public transportation systems and other tourist infrastructure. Extremists have targeted and attacked subway and rail systems, as well as aviation and maritime services. In the past several years, these types of attacks have occurred in cities such as Moscow, London, Madrid, and Glasgow.

Current information suggests that Al-Qaida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks against U.S. and Western interests in Europe. European governments have taken action to guard against terrorist attack and some have spoken publicly about the heightened threat conditions. In the past several years, attacks have been planned or occurred in various European cities.

Credible information indicates terrorist groups also seek to continue attacks against U.S. interests in the Middle East and North Africa. For example, Iraq remains dangerous and unpredictable. Attacks against military and civilian targets throughout Iraq continue. Methods of attack have included roadside improvised explosive devices, mortars, and shootings; kidnappings still occur as well. Security threat levels remain high in Yemen due to terrorist activities there. The U.S. Embassy has had to close several times in response to ongoing threats by Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). U.S. citizens as well as other Westerners have been targeted for attack in Yemen. U.S. citizens have also been the targets of numerous terrorist attacks in Lebanon in the past (though none recently) and the threat of anti-Western terrorist activity continues to exist there. In Algeria, terrorist attacks occur regularly, particularly in the Kabylie region of the country. In the past
, terrorists have targeted oil processing facilities in both
Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

A number of Al-Qaida operatives and other extremists are believed to be operating in and around Africa. Since the July 11, 2010, terrorist bombings in Kampala, Uganda, for which the Somalia-based, U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility, there have been increased threats against public areas across East Africa. The terrorist attacks of August and September 2010 against the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and African Union (AU) peacekeeping forces in Somalia, as well as the bombing of hotels and minibuses in Somalia, highlight the vulnerabilities to terrorist attacks in East Africa and around the world. Additionally, the terrorist group, Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), has declared its intention to attack Western targets throughout the Sahel (which includes Mali, Mauritania, and Niger), and has claimed responsibility for kidnappings, attempted kidnappings, and the murder of several Westerners.

U.S. citizens considering travel by sea near the Horn of Africa or in the southern Red Sea should exercise extreme caution, as there has been a notable increase in armed attacks, robberies, and kidnappings for ransom by pirates. Merchant vessels continue to be hijacked in Somali territorial waters, while others have been hijacked as far as 1,000 nautical miles off the coast of Somalia, Yemen, and Kenya in international waters.

The U.S. government maritime authorities advise mariners to avoid the port of Mogadishu and to remain at least 200 nautical miles off the coast of Somalia. In addition, when transiting around the Horn of Africa or in the Red Sea, it is strongly recommended that vessels travel in convoys and maintain good communications at all times. U.S. citizens traveling on commercial passenger vessels should consult with the shipping or cruise-ship company regarding precautions that will be taken to avoid hijacking incidents. Commercial vessels should review the Department of Transportation Maritime Administration's suggested piracy countermeasures for vessels transiting the Gulf of Aden, which can be found at http://www.marad.dot.gov/news_room_landing_page/horn_of_africa_piracy/horn_of_africa_piracy.htm.

The U.S. government continues to receive information that terrorist groups in South and Central Asia may also be planning attacks in the region, possibly against U.S. government facilities, U.S. citizens, or U.S. interests. The presence of Al-Qaida and its affiliates, Taliban elements, Lashkar-e-Taiba, indigenous sectarian groups, and other terror organizations, many of which are on the U.S. government's list of Foreign Terror Organizations (FTOs), poses a potential danger to U.S. citizens in the region. Terrorists and their sympathizers have demonstrated their willingness and ability to attack targets where Americans or Westerners are known to congregate or visit. Their actions may include, but are not limited to, vehicle-born explosive attacks, improvised explosive device attacks, assassinations, carjackings, rocket attacks, assaults, or kidnappings.

Examples of potential attacks in South Asian states include Pakistan, where a number of extremist groups continue to target U.S. and other Western citizens and interests, and Pakistani government officials and military/law enforcement personnel. Suicide bombing attacks continue to occur throughout the country on a regular basis, often targeting government authorities such as police checkpoints and military installations, as well as public areas such as mosques, and shopping areas. In Afghanistan, remnants of the former Taliban regime and the Al-Qaida terrorist network, as well as other groups hostile to International Security Assistance Force (ISAF)/NATO military operations, remain active. There is an ongoing threat to kidnap and assassinate U.S. citizens and Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) workers throughout the country. In India, there is a continuing threat of terrorism as attacks have randomly targeted public places frequented by Westerners, including luxury and their hotels, trains, train stations, markets, cinemas, mosques, and restaurants in large urban areas.

Supporters of terrorist groups such as the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, Al-Qaida, the Islamic Jihad Union, and the Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement are active in the Central Asian region. Members of these groups have expressed anti-U.S. sentiments and have attacked U.S. government interests in the past. Previous terrorist attacks conducted in Central Asia have involved improvised explosive devices, suicide bombings, assassinations, and kidnappings.

The Camp Casey Tax Center located in Maude Hall, Bldg. 2440, will open Jan. 24 for customers to file their 2010 tax returns. Customers should first make an appointment by calling 730-3591. Income tax preparation services are free for U.S. servicemembers, U.S. military retirees and Department of the Army civilians. Independent contractors employed by the Defense Department are not entitled to free tax preparation services, but can visit the center to get information about where to file their tax returns while they are in Korea.

Seoul Children’s Grand Park will be running free sledding facilities every day (10:00 – 17:00) from December 27th, 2010 to February 27th, 2011. The sledding hill is located near the entrance of the eco-pond deck right beside the main gate of the Children’s Grand Park, on a plot of land measuring 1,825㎡. Here, visitors can ride the traditional Korean sleds and even try their hand at Korean traditional top-spinning. Revised Command Sponsorship Program (CSP) Policy in Korea

1. Every member of the command is vital to mission success; however, because of our limited infrastructure, Command Sponsorship (CS) in Korea can only be offered to about one-third of the over 14,000 Service members with families. To be sure we use this limited CS most effectively, I charged the CSP Task Force (TF) to determine the modifications needed to ensure the CSP meets our mission needs and is fair, consistent, predictable, and transparent. In doing so, the TF developed a policy to ensure CS is available to Service members who occupy duty positions where continuity would most improve mission readiness. This revised policy meets commanders’ mission readiness and continuity requirements by aligning CS into three prioritized categories, providing the commanders flexibility to meet mission requirements most effectively, while improving the quality of life for Service members and their families.

2. The United States Forces Korea (USFK) Regulation 614-1, Military Command Sponsorship Program, has been updated and is available for review on the USFK website. Since all positions cannot be command sponsored at this time, we had to prioritize positions to ensure we meet mission readiness and continuity requirements. The revised policy provides a systematic method of allocating CS among three categories: Priority 1 (Key Billets), Priority 2 (Component Commander Mission Continuity Requirements), and Priority 3 (Component Commander-Managed CS billets). Each Service performed a detailed analysis of all its positions in Korea and determined where it is most important to have Service members on longer tours to ensure overall mission readiness and continuity requirements are met. In order to achieve this goal, the priority 1 and 2 CS positions encompass approximately 90% of the CS allocations.

3. Priority 1 includes key billets which are so vital to the mission we mandate Service members serve 24-month tours whether they bring their families or not. These positions are approved by higher headquarters and we have not made any modifications to Priority 1 billets. We established a Priority 2 category to improve mission readiness/ continuity. The number and specific type of positions are determined by unit commanders, approved by Component commanders, and vary by Service, location and unit. To further clarify, the Priority 2 category includes those military jobs from which commanders benefit the most by having personnel stay for 24- and 36-month tours, such as Service members in key leadership positions, those requiring lengthy pre- or post-arrival training or certification to perform their jobs in Korea, or low density/hard-to-fill skill sets. Commanders will fill remaining Priority 3 positions at their discretion, with the flexibility to consider factors such as recent deployments, dual military or single military families, those serving consecutive overseas tours, as well as junior Service member opportunities. The Navy and Marine CS opportunities are aligned to specific positions, which are centrally managed by their respective service centers and are based on available allocations by location.

4. Because of current infrastructure limitations and the fact that all USFK areas are at or near CS capacity, CSP allocations must be managed closely and synchronized with mission requirements until we achieve full tour normalization. As a result, the CSP management authority for an organization will be delegated to the appropriate command level no lower than the grade of O-6. As we move through this transition, we will begin using the priority categories to align most of the available CS opportunities to Priority 2 personnel. The realignment to meet mission readiness and continuity requirements will affect the availability of CS for the Priority 3 personnel currently on the waiting list. Given the projected flow of inbound and outbound personnel, it may take anywhere from 12 to 18 months to reset the CSP to redistribute the majority of the CS opportunities to the Priority 2 category.

5. By Dec. 10, 2010, commanders will conduct town hall meetings and commanders’ calls to explain the revised policy, answer your questions, and provide detailed information on Priority 1, 2 and 3 categories. In addition, each respective chain of command will contact every member on the waiting list to discuss how these changes impact them and the options that are available for them and their families. We'll also announce changes by way of AFN, newspaper articles, and the USFK Command Sponsorship website, as well as specific information on service component websites.

6. Because of the great quality of life and a desire for families to remain together at a time when many have been separated, more and more Service members want to come to Korea and more and more families want to accompany them. I appreciate your continued patience during this transition as we implement the revised CSP policy on our way to full tour normalization in Korea. We will continue to pursue the required funding and infrastructure to expand CS opportunities as quickly as we can.

School Closure Hotline

Casey Elementary School has established a hotline for information about school delays and closures. The conditions are: 1) remain open; 2) two-hour delay and 3) closed. During days when school is delayed, buses will pick-up children two hours later than normal and they will return home at the regular time. JangHeung Art Park

If you are looking for something fun to do one afternoon with your childen, then try the JungHeung Art Park. It is an outdoor/indor art park. There are plenty of things for children to play on and climb in.
All signs are in Korean however it is fairly easy to figure out prices, and the cashier will show you on a calculator what you need to pay. For a family of 3: 2 adults and 1 child it cost 16,000 Won.
Directions: From CRC head south on 39. Go through underpass then stay to the right and continue on 39. Continue on 39 and go through a 2nd tiny underpass. About 2.3kilometers past this you will take a right turn, almost 130-degree-angle and you will be on a tiny little two lane road. Follow this little road and you will see what appears to be small amusement park rides on the right. To the left is the Art Park.

Loaner Furniture

It has come to my attention that the loaner furniture will only be delivered once (uless you have things on back order) and picked up once. What this means is if you "borrowed" beds from housing while waiting for your beds to show up in your HHG shipment, and you want to return them when you don't need them any longer it is going to cost you! So, only "borrow" thing things you don't have coming on your shipment.

What I have heard from several friends when they tried to return beds was that if housing was to do the pick up they would also pick up the fridge, washer and dryer as well. This poses a problem technically because we are not allowed to ship major appliances over here. We all had to put our washer/dryer and if we had them, refrigerators into storage. If you want to arrange for a partial pick up of "borrowed" furniture you will hae to pay a fee. The fee my friend was quoted for one twin-sized bed was $100!

Let's hope that with all the new family members here these kinks will get worked out. This is what I think the Housing Office should do with the loaner furniture.
1. Have plenty of furniture on hand so service members don't have to ship any of their furniture here.
2. If a Service Member has "borrowed" furniture they are not longer needing (due to HHG) and want to turn it in they should come get it for free (see #3).
3. If all the "Extra" "Borrowed" furniture was turned in then there probably wouldn't be such a back log of people waiting for furniture that are sitting on the floor to eat dinner, watch TV, etc!

Since this area is new to having family members we need to help them get the system up and running correctly. Let's all do our part and fill out the ICE cards and let them know not just our grievances but also our recommendations to help the system work better. Remember we can all work together to make this a great assignment for everyone coming here.

CRC Theater

According to the USAG Red Cloud FB page the "USAG-Red Cloud theater will not be re-opened until Jan. 18, 2011 per AAFES general manager Gloria Cho."
I was really sad to read about this. Right now there is not a whole lot available for entertainment on CRC besides the bowling alley, the gym, and golfing. It seems someone needs to rethink what they are doing by having all of these things under construction at one time. It sure doesn't help morale. Sorry people. However... let's be positive. There is a bus to Casey where they are playing movies, and their CAC is awesome.

Here are a couple more things you should not leave the good old USA without. First is hair products. If you are used to buying product from a salon then stock up on it and send it in your shipment. If there is a particular anything that you just love then I suggest you bring some with you. Better to have it and not need it then to wish you had packed some! The next thing is eye prescriptions. I can't find any place on post that will do an exam for contacts. They sell them but they can't do the exams. So bring your prescriptions with you. If you are due for an exam get one before you leave.

This is the restaurant

We stumbled upon this American restaurant while looking for an outdoor museum. We did find the museum and it is right next to this restaurant. We went in thinking it would be an inexpensive cafe but found out it's really more fine dining. They had a nice wine list and a very good menu with beef, lamb, and seafood selections available. The least expensive item was 19,000 won.
To get there: Go south on route 39 out of Uijeongbu. Turn right on 371 (this is a 45 degree turn) toward Jangheung. Follow this little road through town, about 1kilometer and the restaurant is on your left adjascent to the Art Park. There is also a little amusement park on the right side of the street.

There is not a whole lot of information out there on Malou yet. As you can see from the picture it will be causing alot of rain in our area on Wednesday and Thrusday. Tropical Depression 10W: What to expect when

5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3: Looking at Tropical Depression 10W to strengthen into a tropical storm and rumble about 15 miles southwest of Kadena Air Base at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Local forecasts call for rain to begin falling about 8 p.m. Friday. Winds of 40 mph plus should kick up around 3 a.m. and last until 3 p.m., with maximum gusts of 58 mph about 8 a.m. Wind and rain should taper off and exit the Okinawa area rapidly, but giving way to more rain through Wednesday.

Good news (at this point) for Korea -- 10W's forecast track takes it into the middle of the Yellow Sea/West Sea, north-northwest away from the peninsula. But that could change. PST will keep a sharp lookout.

Hot on the heels of our last Typhoon is a little Tropical Depression 10W. Right now it is only a Tropical Depression but it is looking to be upgraded by this weekend when it hits Okinawa. It is projected to affect us on Tuesday. Hopefully we will have a sunny weekend between the two storms.

CRC Family Preparedness List for Typhoons

This is from the CRC Family Preparedness Guidebook pages 12 and forward:

TCCOR ONE Caution: Winds of 50 knots (58 mph) or greater are anticipated and forecasted to occur within the next three hours. Take appropriate safety measures.

 Depending on the intensity of the storm and the closest point of approach to the local area, the Commander, may direct that all installation activities cease immediately or that activities operate on a restricted basis.

 Fill bathtubs, sinks and other containers with water for use as an emergency water supply. Water can be disinfected in emergency situations by adding 1/2 teaspoon of bleach to 5 gallons of water.

 Assemble towels, rags, and mops to absorb rainwater that may seep into your quarters.

TCCOR ONE Emergency: Winds of 50 knots (58 mph) or greater are occurring. Routine operations cease and manning is limited to essential personnel only.

 Limit telephone usage to emergencies only.

 Draw blinds and drapes to prevent possible injury from broken glass. One window downwind from the approaching destructive wind should be opened several inches. This will prevent the creation of a vacuum inside the house.

 During a typhoon, the eye of the storm may pass over the area. If so, there will be a noticeable calm, but do not be fooled into thinking the storm is over. After the calm there is a rapid build-up of wind that will come from the opposite direction. Close the windows previously opened and open another on the opposite side of the house (downwind side).

 Stay inside. Do not attempt to go outside unless directed to do so by local authorities.

 Do not leave your home or shelter until the ―All Clear Announcement is announced.

 Stay tuned to Command Channel or AFN radio station for information updates.

All FMWR facilities, except gymnasiums, will be closed. AAFES and DeCA facilities will be open with minimum manning. All on-post and inter-post buses will be fully operational. Additional employees selected by their directors will come to work. All schools in Area 1 and II are closed; there will not be any bus transportation to the schools. Stay tuned for updates."

USAG-Red Cloud: Peak wind 50G75Kt at 02/1500L

Typhoon Kompasu is forecast to make landfall on the northwestern coast of the Korean Peninsula at 02/1400L. Expect the storm strength to slowly weaken as it exits the eastern coast.

Rainfall from 4-6 inches can be expected in Areas I, II, and III.
Maximum wind expected is 75 knots for Areas I,II, and 70 knots for Areas III, and 65 knots for Area IV.
Wave Heights of 16-19 feet are forecast for the West Sea.

Typhoon 08W Kompasu

Typhoon Kompasu is headed our way and scheduled to make landfall on Thursday. Please track this storm. I have found that Weather Underground always has up to date information. Remember to always be prepared for possible power outages, and flooding.

For up to date information on this Typhoon go to the Stars and Stripes tracking web site. This is from their #9 issue of updates. "10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31: All parameters remain the same, except Kadena Air Base 18th Wing Weather Flight forecasts now call for sustained 86-mph winds and gusts up to 120 mph between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Onset of damaging 58-mph winds projected for 1 p.m., lasting until 4 a.m. Wednesday. Next update after noon. Still time -- though not much -- to grab that stray basketball on the balcony and bring it inside before the winds really begin to howl." Please read all of their updates so you know which area they are talking about.

Another great link to keep handy is the Joint Typhoon Warning Center. Remember to refresh your browser once you get there to get the latest information.

This is a link to a great article on Typhoon readiness. It is always a good idea to keep these items on hand during typhoon season. "A seven-day emergency supplies closet is recommended by officials. Stocking these items will protect families during a typhoon, when power is frequently off and water supplies contaminated:

Canned meats, fruits and vegetables
High-energy foods such as nuts, raisins and granola
Infant/baby food and supplies
Pet food
Non-perishable food
Over-the-counter medications
Garbage bags
Water (at least one gallon per person daily)
Manual can opener
Batteries
Matches in waterproof container

Keep in mind it is always worse on the coast, in low areas and if you are in a single story dwelling. Here in South Korea most of us are in high rises so flooding won't affect us. Also none of our water is pottable so keep doing what you normally do with water either buy it or use your filters. Stay safe and keep up with the latest news reports.

Electricity on the Korean economy

Okay... summer has been here for more than a month now. I can tell not by the month but because of my huge electricity bill. Paying for utilities on the economy is expensive. Even if you don't run your AC every day. If you are not very, very careful then you will easily exceed your utility allowance during the summer months. I don't know how it is during the winter months yet so I can't say.

There is a way to track your utility usage in your own apartment. If you have any questions send me an email and I will try and help you sort it out.

Here is a break down for the power usage and the price in Won. Please keep in mind the price has gone up 2% since I recieved this information.

"According to the Ministry of Administration and Safety - some time tomorrow there will be a civil defense exercise that will last 15 minutes. When a siren sounds off-post, all citizens must seek shelter (ie. Underground Shelter). Additionally, all vehicles on all roads must pull over to the right side of the road and stop for the duration of the exercise.

This is for your situational awareness. Please disseminate as widely as possible. Again this is an off-post Korea wide exercise".

Entrance to the Underground Market

Today I went to visit Myeong-dong. So far I have only been to Itaewan shopping. I have to say Myeong-dong is much different. There are many more places to shop here. There are a lot of high end retail shops as well as the Korean boutiques you find in any of the districts. I spend about 2-hours there and didn't even cover all of it. There is a lot of music playing here and there are a lot of large electric billboards. It has a lot of energy to it. Not only is there a regular outside district there is also an underground shopping area in the subway.

You can either take the Subway right to Myeong-dong station and take exit 6 and you are there or take the pay bus to Yonsan and take a taxi out.

The Foot Shop

Today I went to "The Foot Shop" in Myeong-Dong. When you go in the main entrance to the shopping district (exit 6 from the subway), go left at the first street (where Nature Republic is on the corner). Then right on the next one (directly across from Spao). It is down that road on the left side. Look for the sign that says The Foot Shop. You go up three sets of stairs and walk into a really nice little spa. They offer a lot of different massages but I was only interested in the cute little fish. For 10,000 won you get a 20-minute treatment with the fish doctors. It didn't hurt at all. I couldn't tell they were nibbling. It felt more like tiny little nudges, and it sort of tickled. While I was having my little treatment I was also served some very good green tea.

I am anxious to take some of my friends back there so they can experience it as well.

New and Upcoming Price Hikes

This is an exerpt from an article from one of my favorite sites Korea4expats.com that I found very informative and I wanted to share the information. To read the full article click HERE.
"Consumers all across Korea will see an increase in their utility bills in August. On Friday 30 July, the government approved an increase in both electricity and gas rates – an average of 3.5% and 4.9% respectively. The electricity rate hike took effect right away, on Sunday August 1st, but the natural gas will stay the same until September 1st. Water rates will apparently stay the same.

The cost of travelling by bus between Korean cities is also going up; intercity bus fares have been increased by 4.3% while express bus trips will cost an additional 5.3%. On the good news front, rail fares, toll charges and postal rates will remain at their current level.

Car owners will be seeing their auto insurance premiums go up at least 3% (between 3% and 8%) starting September. Insurance firms argue that the hike is necessary as a result of recent changes in the official guideline covering auto repair costs. In June, the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs raised the recommended payment range for mechanics to between 21,553 and 24,252 won per hour. Though not binding, the guideline serves as an industry-wide basis for contracts between mechanics and insurers.

Flying out of Korean is also going to be more expensive. Korean Air is hiking its fares in August up to 10%. Flights bound for the United States and Canada are going up 5% while travelers bound for many European countries as well as Australia and new Zealand are about to pay 5 to 10% more in August than in July. Asiana has just announced that it will be following Korean Air’s lead."

What this means for us in Area 1 that have to pay for our utilities is that we need to watch our power bills even more closely. I am going to post a power spread sheet that I got from a friend that shows usage and cost. Although it is based on cost before the price hike. I personally think the military should just include the utilities in the rent. All of the GS workers have the utilities included in the rent price and they don't have to worry about it. Look for that post today.

Registering Vehicles in Area 1

When we first got here the vehicle registration was still being taken care of at Camp KIM. Now it has moved to Camp Casey. I asked my friend Nicole to get me the new procedure and she did a fantastic job detailing it. Let me know if you have any questions.

Registering your Imported Vehicle

If you are assigned to any of the posts in Area 1, your car must be registered at Camp Casey. If you have imported your vehicle, you have 10 days to do this. Make sure you have a screw driver or necessary equipment to remove your temporary tags and put on your permanent ones .

Please note: ONLY sponsors are authorized to register POVs. No…your POA (Power of Attorney) will not work in this case, per USFK REG 190-1.

Required Items for Registration:

Korean Customs Import Document (SOFA Document)
USFK Driver’s License
Safety Inspection Certificate
Proof of Insurance
Proof of Vehicle Ownership (Previous Title/Registration)
ID Card and Orders
Temporary License Plates
If this is a second vehicle, you will need your approval letter from your command

1. Go to the Visitor’s Bldg on the right by the main gate of Camp Casey to obtain your Temporary (One Day) Pass. Be sure to have your military ID, Proof of Insurance and US Vehicle Registration/Title with you.

2. If your vehicle is older than 2 years old, you will need a Safety Inspection, which is done at Camp Mobile, across the street from Camp Casey’s main gate. This will cost you $20.00.

3. After that is complete, you need to go to building 2440 (Maude Hall), at Camp Casey to begin the registration process. Forms are available outside the office for you to fill out. Take all items listed above, EXCEPT your temporary plates, with you to Vehicle Registration. The clerk will begin your registration. He will give you a personal copy and give you a copy that you need to take to City Hall. You will receive a map with the directions on how to get there.

4. When you arrive at City Hall be sure to take your temporary tags from your vehicle with you, along with the paperwork that needs to be stamped. Go into the Annex on the right. Once you have turned in your tags and had your paperwork stamped, you will be directed to the License Plate store, where you will go to purchase your plates.

5. The License Plate store is on the same street as City Hall and is clearly marked in English. Don’t forget to bring some Won with you (about 20,000) to pay for your new license plates. The gentleman will need to see your paperwork from City Hall also.

6. Once the plates are on your vehicle, you need to head back to Maude Hall to finish the registration process and to get your sticker for the windshield of your vehicle.

7. This sticker may take a day to become active in the system so that you get a DING at the gate instead of a BEEP BEEP BEEP.

Credit and Debit Cards Being Double Charged

I am glad to see this information getting out. I was hit with 5 double charges. I was frustrated not knowing if it was a bank error or vendor error. AAFES is working fast to correct it. So far all of mine have already been credited. Here is the official memo I just got today:

DALLAS - Numerous transactions at Army and Air Force Exchange operations are experiencing a double whammy no one saw coming; a processing error resulting in duplicate charges on credit and debit card transactions.

"Shoppers who swiped their cards anytime between Aug. 7 and Aug. 9 at an AAFES facility are strongly encouraged to review their statements to see if they are impacted by this issue," said AAFES' Chief of Staff Col. Virgil Williams. "If a customer finds a billing anomaly, no action will be required on their part as we're working to correct inaccuracies on their behalf."

Scores of associates from AAFES' Information Technology and Finance and Accounting teams are working around the clock to remedy any and all erroneous charges created as a result of the processing error. "We're putting all the resources we have towards doing the right thing for customers affected by this unfortunate turn of events" said Williams. "If there is an overdraft fee as result of a duplicate charge, we're going to fix it. Our priority is to take corrective action as quickly as possible and return customers' accounts to the exact state they were prior to this glitch."

The processing error that produced duplicate charges affected AAFES locations worldwide. Depending on the type of card used, corrective action could be visible to the customer anywhere from 24 hours to a couple of weeks. "The timeline is subject to a number of variables," said Williams. "Regardless, we want exchange shoppers to know that every possible measure is being taken to eliminate any additional charges and rectify any concerns created as a result of this processing miscue."

Tropical Storm Dianmu

Dianmu will spin northward over the South China Sea to a likely rain-soaked landfall on South Korea at midweek.

As of Monday morning, EDT, the center of Dianmu was located about 200 miles northwest of Okinawa. Movement was towards the north at 15 mph with highest sustained winds of 50 to 55 mph.

A landfall, as a tropical storm, on South Korea, most likely in the southwest, is forecast for early Wednesday.

Such a landfall would bring with it a serious threat of flooding rain. A lesser threat of damaging winds would accompany a tropical storm landfall.
Were Dianmu to strengthen significantly more than forecast, even to a typhoon, destructive winds would happen near its landfall.

There seems to be a continuous flow of information regarding the Casey school K-8. Below is an Official website for Casey school, and an excerpt from an Email that was sent out by PAO about a sneak Peak being offered this Friday. Attached is a slide on the upcoming Town hall meeting about Casey Schools. If you have any more questions please don’t hesitate to ask.

DoDDS Korea is offering a “sneak peek” of the new Casey Elementary School for interested media next Friday, 13 August from 0900-1200. Please call Kevin Olds, DoDDS Korea Education Operations Manager, at 738-5554 to make arrangements. Although the school is still being outfitted, this is an excellent opportunity to give students, parents and your communities an early view of this beautiful facility.

Hanriver Cruise

We did the Hanriver Cruise and it was very pretty. We bought ticket vouchers at the Discover Seoul Desk. We had the attendant there write down direction for us to give to the Taxi driver. We had him write it down on one of thier handouts with all the return directions to give to the Taxi driver when we are finished.
I recommend you give yourself an hour to get there. It won't really take that long to get there, but if there is a lot of traffic you don't want to be late. It took us 20-minutes to catch the Taxi. Once we arrived at Yeo-Ui-do Wharf we went to the Ticket Office and exchaned our vouchers for the tickets. There are little convenience stores for you to pick up drinks, and snacks for the cruise. The cruise itself takes about 70 minutes.
After the cruise we walked across the street to the 63-Building and caught a Taxi to get back to Post.
The cruise we signed up for included a water show from the Banpo Bridge. They have different cruises you can choose from. One of them is a dinner cruise. On the boats they also have a little shop where you can buy water.
The "show" cruise which is what we did ran 15,000 per person. The dinner cruise is 50,000-60,000 pp.

A whole lot of new people are moving to the Yangju area. After a lot of searching I have found a way to get to CRC by bus.
First catch the 80 that will take you to Yangju Station. From there catch the 133 and it will take you to CRC.

U.S. Forces Korea Regulation 190-2 is being updated to reflect that bodies of water, barber
shops and off-post medical and dental facilities, and pharmacies are no longer off-limits. Garrison commanders may still place individual locations or establishments off-limits. Tattoo parlors, body piercing establishments and houses of prostitution remain off-limits USFKwide for safety, health and policy reasons.

Kindergarten Registration:
Department of Defense Education Activity is encouraging parents to enroll kindergarten-aged children for the upcoming school year. To be eligible for kindergarten this fall, children must be 5 years old by Sept. 1. To enroll a child in the military’s school system, parents should have proof of the child’s age (passport or birth certificate), the sponsor’s orders and medical records showing the required immunizations. Free/Reduced Lunch Program:

Parents who want to apply for free or reduced price lunch for their children who will attend Casey
Elementary School need to pick up an application from Army Community Service at Camp Stanley,
bldg. T-2342, Casey Garrison, bldg. S-2306, or Red Cloud Garrison, bldg. S-16. All completed
applications must be returned to the Casey Garrison location with the most current leave and
earnings statements of the Soldier and working spouse to determine the children’s eligibility. For

Outdoor Water Sports at Bukhangang River

On Saturday August 28th, 2010 MWR is having a trip to the Bukhangang River for a day of water fun. Transportation fee is $20 and you can get the schedule when you register. Minimum of 20 needed. Anyone under the age of 18 needs to have a parent or guardian with them.

2010 Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival

12 Beaches Worth Visiting This Summer

If you’re planning on spending time in Korea this summer, a visit to one of its many beaches is an absolute must. Korea is surrounded on three sides by water and has plenty of great beaches in a variety of shapes and sizes. The months of July and August in particular are great times to hit the beach, considering temperatures get as high as 30 degrees Celsius or more. Since most beaches officially open in late June/early July and close toward the end of August, visitors have only a few months to splash around in the water and take part in Korea’s beach culture. Don’t worry though if you can’t make it to Korea during the summer season; there are a number of beachside festivals, water sports, and events all year round!

Directions to MAS*H

After writing my little article on May 30th about finding M*A*S*H I now have easy directions for how to find it yourself. Although as I said in the earlier article it is now a Korean base so you won't be able to actually go inside the base and look at it but you can see the area.
From the back gate of CRC go straight through the light. Stay on that street until you see a sign that says "Nogyang-ro." Go left on this road. Follow it and stay to the right.

Next take a Right turn towards "Yangju Station". Now this little street you are making a funny turn onto is the street that M*A*S*H is on. Go slow so you don't miss it.

Transformers

There are several different kinds of transformers for you to use. However knowing what each one is capable of can save you a lot of heartache in the long run. When you buy a transformer it should have an instruction sheet with it. Put this in a safe place. While your exact transformer may be a different model they can all handle the same amount of appliances. Here is a breakdown from the ones I have.

1KVA Down Voltage - Two or three of the following appliances can be used simultaneously with it: Telephone, CD player, razor, humidifier, television, electric fan, ventilator, power toothbrush, DVD player, VTR, cassette player, CD game player, air bubble maker for fish, hair clippers, scanner, computer, laptop computer.
Things you CAN'T run on the 1KVA: Electric rice cooker, electric frying pan, electronic heater, iron, vacuum cleaner, steam vacuum cleaner, electronic oven, microwave and big refrigerator.

2KVA Down Voltage - You can use several of these low power items together: Phone, games, electric shaver, humidifier, TV, electric fan, ventilating fan, electric toothbrush, DVD, VTR, cassette, Fishbowl bubbler, CD player, electric hair clipper, scanner, PC or laptop.
You can use only one of the following at a time: Household washing machine, iron, refrigerator, mixer, vacuum cleaner, hair dryer, coffee maker and electric rice cooker.
Things you CAN'T run on the 2KVA: Electric frying pan, electric heater over 800W, Drum washing machine (washer dryer) and wall mounted air conditioner

3KVA Down Voltage - You can use several of the following together because they don't use much power: Telephone, games, electric shaver, humidifier, TV, electric fan, extractor fan, electric toothbrush, DVD player, BTR, cassette tape recorder, air-supplier of fishbowl, CDP, hair clippers, scanner, computer, notebook computer.
You can use two of the following products: Home washing machine, iron, refrigerator, mixer, vacuum cleaner, hair drier, electric rice cooker, coffee pot.

Dwarf Play Area

My friend told me about this place about a month ago. Since then I have been searching and trying to find out how to get to it. I finally figured it out. It is a great little day trip in Area 1. Here are the directions by car:

Take 3 North. Go right on 368 towards Pocheon, follow road for a while. Then you will see a sign to Samjeong School, turn left down this little road.

Turn left at this sign

As soon as you turn off you will notice the sign to Herb Island. Go over the little bridge in front of you then stay to the right. The school will be on your left. Soon you will see another sign for Herb Island on your left up a steep road. There is also a little shack here on the right. This is where you stop and a person will collect your fee, give you tickets and a little bag of hard candies for each person. Follow steep road up and drive through the little Herb Island Village. Parking is at the far end.

To the right is the aroma therapy shop where upon entering they will offer you some spearmint oil for your neck. It is warm so young children might not enjoy it. I found it wonderful!

There is a cafe here, a restaurant and bakery. Everything is in Korean but we were able to figure out how to order a cheese pizza at the cafe. I am working on translating the menu. When I get it done I will put it up here for ever everyone to use.

Monsoon Safety Measures

THE MONSOON SEASON IS UPON US ONCE AGAIN! That means rain, rain and more rain! And THAT means:
Flash Floodswhich can move trees and boulders, and destroy buildings & bridges. Most flood deaths are caused by flash floods.
Mud Slidesare a by-product of heavy rains and flooding. If you live in vicinity of a hill be especially wary of this hazard.
Inundated Roads and Walkways-Do not attempt to cross! 6 inches of fast moving water can knock you off your feet and 2 feet of water can float some vehicles.
Overflowing Riversare common during this time. If you live in vicinity of a stream or river, monitor weather advisories closely. If the level starts to rise –leave! Don’t wait until the situation becomes critical.
Downed Power Linesare a common occurrence, especially if they are adjacent to streams or rivers. Avoid them completely! If your vehicle comes into contact with one, stay inside and don’t touch any metal parts.
Undercut Roadsare also a common occurrence during monsoon season. Avoid roads that have been recently subjected to flooding or are adjacent to streams and rivers.

Our situational awareness is the best risk mitigation tool that we can use.
We all need to know:
What’s happening weather-wise
What to do in case of an emergency
Where to go in case of evacuation
Don’t forget to stock up and keep at least one week’s worth of food and living supplies in your home.

Stay strong in the heat

For many Soldiers, the extended daylight of spring and summer means additional opportunities to meet physical training requirements or catch up on outside work and fun. The heat and humidity that accompanies these long days, however, increase the probability of heat injuries and other physical problems.

In much of the United States and within overseas theaters, heat injuries remain a persistent, significant threat to the health and operational effectiveness of Soldiers and other Army personnel. During the past two years, at least 250 Soldiers have been treated for clinically severe heat injuries, including heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Sadly, these conditions can be fatal—in late summer 2009, a young Soldier died after suffering a heat injury during a road march.

Given these overwhelming statistics, it is especially important for Soldiers to protect themselves, their battle buddies and their Families from heat injuries. Early recognition of potential illness is critical to preventing progression to a more serious condition or death.

Minor illnesses such as heat cramps are typically the first sign of heat injury, but without medical intervention, these conditions can progress to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Persons with any of the following symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.

Heat cramps are painful muscle spasms that occur in the abdomen, arms or legs. Individuals who sweat profusely in the heat and drink large quantities of water but fail to adequately replace the body’s salt loss are most at risk of heat cramps.

Heat exhaustion is the most common heat injury. A person suffering from heat exhaustion still sweats but experiences extreme weakness or fatigue, nausea or headache. Other primary symptoms include clammy and moist skin, a pale or flushed complexion and a normal or slightly elevated body temperature. Additional warning signs include heavy sweating, an unsteady walk, dizziness, giddiness, rapid pulse and shortness of breath.

Heat stroke is the most serious heat injury. It occurs when the body’s temperature regulation system fails and sweating becomes inadequate to cool the body. A heat stroke victim’s skin is hot, usually dry with no sweating, red or spotted and their body temperature typically reaches 104 degrees F or higher. Other warning signs include a rapid, strong pulse, mental confusion, throbbing headache, dizziness and nausea. Symptoms can quickly progress to loss of consciousness, coma or seizure. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and can lead to death.

There are several things Soldiers can do to mitigate their risk of heat injury. The National Institute for Safety and Occupational Health recommends scheduling outdoor jobs during the cooler parts of the day, taking frequent rest and water breaks in cool, shaded areas, and avoiding sugary, caffeinated and alcoholic drinks when working or playing outside.
